This course provides an overview of community-based services in Florida that serve as alternatives to State Mental Health Treatment Facilities for forensic patients. Learners will explore the Department’s services, responsibilities, and goals, with a focus on the importance of diversion as an effective option for many individuals. The course highlights how community treatment supports the development of daily living and coping skills while allowing individuals to remain close to home and maintain everyday responsibilities. Participants will also examine available placement options, referral processes, and eligibility criteria, along with the most recent statutory changes and what they mean for the future of services.
